3801 in Penrith on the weekend.

STEAM returned to Penrith on 25-26th July, with Australia’s favourite and perhaps most iconic heritage locomotive 3801 (the Legend of Steam) ferrying passengers from Penrith through the scenic Lower Blue Mountains to Valley Heights and back.

With tickets sold out a week in advance, passengers fortunate enough to be on the respective trips experienced the sights, sounds and unmistakable atmosphere of a mainline steam journey as 3801 travelled up and down the mountain each day.

Watchers and travellers alike kept Facebook buzzing each day. Many posts identified key trackside viewing spots along the journey, allowing enthusiasts, photographers and the general public to be part of the weekend’s experience and perhaps catch that iconic photo or video.

NB: Locomotive 3801 is the flagship of the State Operational Heritage Fleet. Proudly funded by the NSW Government, it continues to lead services across the NSW Mainline as one of the few steam locomotives anywhere in the world capable of running unassisted on main lines.
