IT was a capacity crowd at Richmond Race Club on Saturday 29th November 2025, on hand to see 20-year-old Tyrell Adams (Mt Druitt) defeat Shamal Ram Anuj to win the Australian National Boxing Federation (ANBF) Australian Featherweight title, becoming the 2nd-youngest fighter to hold the title behind the legendary Lionel Rose.
It was a unanimous points decision, with the judges awarding Tyrell every round.
That win was undoubtedly a major factor in Tyrell being named as the ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ in the Blacktown City Sports Awards, which were announced earlier this month.
Tyrell was born in Mt Druitt and attended Lethbridge Park PS and Shalvey HS, before returning to Lethbridge Park PS as a Teacher’s Aide.
He had 15 fights, with 14 wins, as an amateur, beginning in 2015 through to 2025. He also played Rugby League for St Marys, limiting his boxing training to a couple of days per week and also fighting in various weight divisions, due to varying body weight and a relaxed training regime.
“I wasn’t focussed on boxing, as I was also playing Rugby League for St Marys. I began in Under 6’s and played through to U17’s,” Tyrell said.
His commitment to boxing is now his priority and has allowed him to fight exclusively in the Featherweight division (126lbs / 57kg), where he has made an immediate impact.

Earlier this year, in what ‘Fightnews’ described as a stunning upset, Sem Japet Enano defeated Tyrell to win the vacant IBO Oceania Featherweight title on April 8. The bout took place at the Richmond Race Club and all three judges scored the fight 80-72 in favour of Enano, delivering a clear shutout victory. The loss was Tyrell’s first as a professional.
Tyrell turned professional in 2025 and has had eight professional bouts, winning seven (including the Australian Featherweight title late last year).
He trains under Mark Hardman at Box ‘N’ Burn Gym and Fitness centre in Windsor, having begun his amateur boxing career under the tutelage of Hardman in 2015 and training with him for the vast majority of the past 11 years.
Two of Tyrell’s major sponsors are ‘Built Smart Solutions’ in Dabee (NSW) and ‘Powrbox’ in Smeaton Grange (NSW).
